Any rule violation that stops play is a fault.
A fault is any action that stops play because of a rule violation: hitting the ball out of bounds, into the net, volleying from the kitchen, or violating the two-bounce rule. A fault by the serving team ends their serve; a fault by the receiving team scores a point for the server.
